[Purpose]We analyzed the muscular condition of stroke patients using positron emission tomography (PET). We measured the muscular activity of the lower extremities during level walking by 18F-fluoro-deoxyglucose (18F-FDG) PET method. We measured the volume and density of the segments of extremities by PET transmission mode.[Results]1. At first, we presented an analysis of the muscular activity of the lower extremities of healthy persons during level walking by 18F-FDG PET method. The concurrent validity of measuring the muscular activity of the lower extremity was demonstrated. The interesting findings were that,the activity of the lower leg muscles was larger than that of the thigh muscles during level walking. The muscular activity of the soleus was the largest among all the muscles examined. Among the gluteal muscles, the muscular activity of the gluteus minimus was larger than that of the gluteus maximus and gluteus medius.2. The muscular activities of the lower leg of the stroke paretic side were lower than those of healthy person. The muscular activities of the thigh of the paretic side were as large as those of healthy person. The muscular activity of the gluteus minimus of the paretic side was lower than that of healthy person. The muscular activities of the medial hamstrings and tibialis posterior of the non-paretic side were higher than those of the healthy person.3. The PET transmission mode can detect the density of object. We measured the volume and density of the segments of extremities by this method. We confirmed the reliability of measuring the density of the segments of extremities. A decrease in the density of the upper arm was observed in stroke patients.
