1 ヘレニズム哲学においては、それまでの哲学の流れとは異なり、実生活への関心が前面に出てくる。すなわち、ギリシア世界を制圧したアレクサンドロス大王の死をもって始まり、ローマによる地中海世界制圧をもって終わる同時代においては、不安定な世界において生きる個人に向け、ストア派、エピクロス派、懐疑派の各学派はそれぞれ、この世で生きぬいてゆくための道を、各個人に身近なものとして指し示したのである。このような関心のもとに、今年度は、たんに (1)アカデメイアによるストア派批判、 (2)ピュロン主義による判断保留の勧め、および彼らの目標である無動揺(平静)、判断保留のなかで生きてゆくための行為の規準のみならず(前年度までの中心主題)、 (3)エピクロス派原子論における存在論・認識論と、彼らの目標でもあった無動揺(平静)の関係、 (4)ストア派における決定論と行為の自由の問題等も視野に入れて、研究を遂行した。 研究の一環として、以前から従事していたA・A・ロング『ヘレニズム哲学』の翻訳も進めた。翻訳は2002年の内には出版の予定である。2 セクストス・エンペイリコス『学者たちへの論駁』第1〜第6巻の翻訳も前年度に引き続いて行ない、同時に、セクストスが批判対象とする文法術、弁論術、幾何学、数論、星論、音楽についても調査・研究を進めた。ここから出てきた興味深い知見としては、 (1)これらの学問と哲学との親近的な関係-例えば星論(占星術)は、ストア派の決定論と密接に関わっていた、 (2)当時の最先端の科学との関係において、例えば、プトレマイオス等の天文学者たちは、科学が得意とする経験的・実証的研究に従事する一方で、ミクロコスモスとマクロコスモスの一致といった哲学思想に基づき、古代懐疑主義が攻撃する種類の思弁的な思想をも展開していたこと、等が挙げられる。 (3)当時の科学の経験的・実証的な側面に対して、懐疑主義はいかなる態度をとったかという問題、 (4)古代科学における思弁性と経験主義的性格の共存の問題は、今後追求すべき興味深いテーマである。 セクストス・エンペイリコス『学者たちへの論駁』第1〜第6巻の翻訳も本年中には完成の予定である。
