豪農の家政改革は、一個人の経営立て直しにとどまらず、地域的な信用構造の面からして、村共同体と地域社会に大きな影響を及ぼさざるをえない。その社会的・政治的意識や行動は常に衆人環視の対象であった。その家政改革や行動について論究する場合には、やはり彼らの日常的な業務内容と地域社会状況について検討を加える必要がある。以上のような観点から、山田家文書に残された書状類及び触・御用留の類の分析を通じて、山田家が家政改革を行う時期の東部遠州地域における政治的・社会的な状況と、その中での同家の役割について検討を加えた。山田家の経済的蓄積期にあたる18世紀後半には、山田家は庄屋として領主蔵米を扱い、当該地域の積み出し港である川崎湊の廻船問屋八郎左衛門と日常的なつながりを持って、八郎左衛門所有の湊の蔵(領主蔵米の一時保管庫)の実質的管理にも関わった。山田家の炭山経営にも八郎左衛門は関わっていたと推定され、こうした廻船問屋商人とのつながりが同家の豪農としての成長に直接関わっていたと考えられる。しかし、その後、山田家の経営は順調には進展せず、米穀類の価格低下や地域的金融の混乱の中で家政改革を余儀なくされる。最初に家政改革が行われた文政期は、まさにそうした不況下で幕府が大々的な倹約触(文政2)を出した時期であった。この時、山田家は郡中惣代として倹約と諸物価引き下げに関わる郡中議定を策定するのに奔走していたが、これは同家の経営上の問題と全く二重写しとなっている。豪農の社会的・政治的活動をその家政改革は相即的なものであると見てよいだろう。なお、当該議定に関わる郡中惣代間の書状のやりとりでは、隣接する他郡の議定内容なども意識されており、こうした有力百姓層においては社会意識の面でかなりの共通性があったことが理解できる。今後更に書状類からそうした意識を探っていく必要があろう。
