项目摘要

筒井徳二郎の海外巡業について、昨年度同様、国内と海外の調査を推し進め、関係者に面会したり、公演記録を収集することで、新たに事実を掘り起こすことができた。まず国内調査であるが、二世市川左団次のもとにいた元歌舞伎俳優で、筒井と一座を組んだことがあり、俳優としての筒井を直接知る生き証人(現在89歳)から、その芸風と人物像について聞き書きすることができて、筒井の海外巡業成功の理由を考えるための重要な証言が得られた。今一つは筒井一座の元座員(現在91歳の女性)の家族から海外各地の公演プログラム、巡業中の日付入りの写真、私信、ホテルの宿泊カード等、70年前の直接資料の数々を提供頂いた結果、一座の巡業経路、公演プログラムの内容等について調査が一段と進展した。今年度の海外調査は、これまで資料が不足していた地域、フィンランドのヘルシンキ、エストニアのタリン、ラトヴィアのリーガ、ルーマニアのブカレスト、オランダのハーグを巡り、国立図書館及び演劇資料館において筒井一座の公演プログラム、新聞記事等の資料を入手することができた。またポーランド公演については通信で資料を手に入れることができた。今回、これらヨーロッパの周辺地域においても一座の公演が多大の反響を呼んでいたことが明らかになった。以上のように、今年度も重要資料を多数収集することができたが、この二年間の調査で、俳優としての筒井徳二郎の経歴と海外巡業の全貌をほぼ明らかにするに足る資料が集まった。現在これらの資料を分析中であり、別紙の通り中間報告を発表している。なお、筒井の海外巡業の文化交流史的な意義についてはしばらく考究の時間が必要であり、全体をまとめて公にするまでに数年を要するだろう。
