1999年8月に研究代表者がドイツに出張し、当企画の実現に向けて必要な資料を収集、またベルリンにあるDEFA財団、最先端技術で字幕翻訳を行うTitelbild社、DEFA作品の版権を所有するProgress配給会社などに、協力を依頼するとともに実質的なアドバイスを受けた。1999年10月より、DEFA映画に関心の高いドイツ文学研究者で共同研究グループを作り、2週間に1回位のペースで上映候補作品を鑑賞し、選考にあたった。研究会では、映画字幕の翻訳家や技術者からレクチャーを受けたり、DEFA作品に関する文献をもとに映画論を交わし、字幕翻訳の担当者を決定した。1999年末の出張では、DEFA財団などへの経過報告を行い、上映予定作品のドイツ語版ビデオ、各作品のダイアローグ・リストを入手した。2000年1月、2月は、字幕担当者それぞれの翻訳作業に入り、3月には、研究代表者を含む6名の選んだ6作品の字幕制作用の日本語翻訳が概ね出来上がっている。今後の予定としては、東西ドイツ統一10周年にあたる2000年中、12月初旬にシンポジウムと特集上映を実現させるのが目標である。実施は「研究成果公開」という形にできれば理想的である。また、今回の映画の自幕翻訳の準備を通じて、PCシステムを使用するサブタイトリング教授という、新しい展開も考え始めている。
