現在は学問の変革期に当たるとの認識に立って、地理学の各分野の現状を論評し、21世紀への展望を行った。原則として個別論文の引用は行わないこととし、レビュー論文、図書、データーベース等を利用して作業を行ったが、個別論文へは各章末の文献からたどり着けるように配慮した。レビューの対象にした期間は最小限過去10年間とした。日本学術会議の第17期地理学研究連絡委員会委員を中核として研究を組織したが、研連委員でカバーできない分野については、それ以外の研究者数名の協力を得た。取り上げた分野は、風土論、地形計測、営力地形学、地形発達史、気候学、水文学、地生態学、土壌地理学、土壌学、地図学、地図情報科学、地域研究、農業地理学、都市地理学、歴史地理学、交通地理学、社会・政治・応用地理学、土地利用、地理教育、気候地理学と自然保護の20分野である。地理学は古い歴史をもち、広範な分野をその中に含んでいたが、学問分野の専門化・細分化の流れのなかで、地理学から分離独立の方向をとった分野もある。しかし環境問題の深刻化とともに、地理学のもつ総合的な視点が最評価されるようになってきた。地理学は自然と人間との関係性に着目して、フィールド情報に基づいて研究を行うところにその独自性があり、環境問題は絶好の研究対象でもある。地理学と社会との関係をさらに密にするよう努力すべきであるとの指摘が、各分野に共通してみられた。全20章、約200項の報告書を作成し、英文の要旨も付して、国内外の研究機関に配布した。
