本研究の目的は、伝統的なレーエン制に代わる近代的なアムト制の出現を通して、領邦国家が人的結合国家から領域国家へと移行するプロセスを解明することにある。本年度は昨年度までのアムト制に関する研究成果を踏まえ、私の研究主題のもう一つの柱である、ケルン大司教領におけるレーエン制の形成と展開について取り組んだ。私の大司教領に関する研究はなお継続中であるが、他の領邦に関する諸研究にも目配りするならば中世後期においてもレーエン制は、領邦君主に支配権の構築のために利用しうるさまざまな可能性を提供したといえる。すなわち、領邦君主は積極的にレーエン政策を援用することによって領邦を外部から防衛することができただけでなく、領邦内においても自立的勢力を中立化し、自身の支配権を強化・拡大することが可能となった。レーエン制支配と領域支配は原理的に全く異なる構造をもつにもかかわらず、中世後期においてレーエン制が領域支配を構築するための有用な手段となり得たのは、レーエン制が領域化と呼ばれる傾向を示したからである。しかし視点を変えて見るならば、レーエン制はもはやそれのみでは領域支配の構築には不十分であり、あくまでも領邦君主の直轄支配を補うための手段であった。3年間の研究を通じ、現時点において次のような見通しが得られた。アムトはその安定的な統治構造によって領域国家へと変貌を遂げつつある領邦国家のニーズに応えうる役割を果たした。しかし中世後期におけるアムト制は近代的な統治形態の中になお中世的な人的要素すなわちレーエン制的要素を伴なうものであり、中世後期における領邦国家は、アムト制を支配原理の支柱としつつもアムト制とレーエン制の相互作用の上に成り立っていた,今後さらにこの見通しを検証していく必要がある。なお本年度の研究を遂行するにあたり、当補助金を活用して刊行史料集の購入とドイツの大学への文献複写依頼を行なった。
