Arctic Volcanism in Woodfjorden: Fundamental magneto-mineralogical data for magnetic modeling and estimation of emplacement conditions of Quaternary volcanic rocks

Within the project “Arctic Volcanism in Woodfjorden: geodynamic implications (WOODVOLC)” organized by the University Centre in Svalbard and the Department of Arctic Geology, Norway, two volcanic units in the Woodfjorden area NW of Spitsbergen (Miocene-aged basalts of the Seidfjellet Formation and the Quaternary Volcanic Complex of Bockfjorden) will be investigated by petrography, geology/remote sensing, and noble gas geochemistry in fluids, volcanic glass and olivine from mantle xenoliths. Field sampling and mapping of the volcanic structures along with rock magnetic and magneto-mineralogical surveys are envisaged as part of the proposed research project, which can provide fundamental data for magnetic modeling and the emplacement conditions of the volcanic rock units. These data will help better understand the magmatic origin and volcanism that formed these rocks. This is important for a better understanding of the recent geological evolution of Spitsbergen and its onshore geology. Our results will be compared with those of the other working groups and those of alkaline volcanic deposits of Central Europe obtained within the DFG project “Emplacement conditions of pyroclastic deposits inferred from magnetic properties of the Eger maar-diatreme (ICDP-EGER drill site S4) and Eifel volcanoes”.
