I continued my research on "Thomas Hardy and the Gothic Revival" on the basis of the results and discoveries in the previous years.(1)Have completed the translation of Michael J.Lewis, The Gothic Revival (London : Thames and Hudson, 2002). The Japanese translation will be published in May this year.(2)Made a research trip to Britain and Germany, where I visited "New Gothic" buildings, buildings built during the period of the Gothic Revival. These buildings include : All Saints Church (by William Butterfield), "Arabian Gothic" buildings, gothic synagogues, Hamburg City Hall and St.Nicholas'Cathedral (both by British architect George Gilbert Scott).(3)Read papers on Hardy and the Gothic Revival. The focus was on his use of gothic and new gothic buildings as means of the representation of the 19^<th>-century British culture and ideology.The result of my research will be developed and be put in a wider perspective in the future. I will continue the translation of Roger Dixon, Victorian Architecture (London : Thames and Hudson, 1978), which will be followed/complemented by the research study of A.W.N.Pugin, John Ruskin, and the ecclesiologist (or Cambridge Camden Society).
