『熊野観心十界図』と名付けられた土俗的な仏画は、17世紀初頭以降の日本社会で制作され、紀伊半島南端に拠点をもつ熊野比丘尼の絵解きの対象となった。一方、『甘露幀画』と称されるエネルギッシュな仏画は、李朝支配下の朝鮮半島で制作され、民衆的な信仰の対象となった。前者『熊野観心十界図』は後者『甘露幀画』を直接の母胎とし、むしろその翻案によって成立した。研究の出発点に私が立てたこの作業仮説はほぼ証明できたように思う。『甘露幀画』の16世紀に遡る古本は神戸薬仙寺本(1589年)、松阪朝田寺本(1591年)など、日本国内に現存する。朝鮮半島に遺存する諸本で最古のものはソウルの国立中央博物館の所蔵品である旧寶石寺本(1649年)である。これはソウルで詳細に実見することができた。寶石寺本は図柄の基本的な構成など、日本に現存する諸本と時系列上に並記することが可能である。もともと『瑜伽焔口経』系の仏典をテキストとする『甘露幀画』の原型を、土俗的な施餓鬼信仰のフィルター越しにではあるが、なお読みとることができるように思う。しかし寶石寺本では『甘露幀画』特有のダイナミックな画題の横溢がすでに始まっている。人間のあらゆる悲惨な死に様を描き、その供養をはかる精神が、画面上で「死に様」の範型をつぎつぎと生み出していくのである。15〜17世紀の日本社会における施餓鬼(水陸)斎の実例を古文書・古記録から辿りながら、『甘露幀画』が『熊野観心十界図』に翻案されながら、日本社会に需要されていく時代背景を考えてみた。その成果は、なお韓国での調査を継続しながら、出版社・吉川弘文館が刊行する歴史文化ライブラリーの一冊として執筆予定である。
