本企画調査は,日本地形学連合が組織し,2001年8月23〜28日に中央大学理工学部を主会場として開催される国際研究集会「第5回国際地形学会議(5th ICG:Fifth International Conference on Geomorphology)」の研究内容面での企画と準備を目的とし,日本における地形学の全分野に関する研究成果の総括,シンポジウム,野外巡検などの企画・準備を主眼とした.本企画調査の結果,次の成果を得た.1.参加者:2001年2月28日現在で,58カ国から490名の登録者と618本の発表申込(講演要旨)が着信した.多数の日本人参加者がまだ登録していないので,最終登録者は600名を越える見込みである.2.16本のセッションと22本のシンポジウムが成立し,プログラムを作成中である.3.シンポジウム用の研究成果を整理し,資料を作成した.4.国際地形学会理事会との綿密な調整により特別講演者(8名)を決定した.5.国内巡検地域を調査し,海外からの参加者数も考慮し,10コースを成立させた.6.一日巡検地域を調査し,海外からの参加者数も考慮し,12コースを成立させた.7.国際地形学会理事会との連絡調整(2000年8月,中国南京市)により,第5回国際地形学会議の全体像,発展途上国からの参加者に対する財政支援計画および会議後の出版計画など重要事項について合意に達した.8.28カ国の発展途上国からの主として若手研究者34名に財政支援をすることに決定し,この会議を通じて21世紀における地形学の飛躍的発展に資することにした.
