これまでの研究の成果を検証するために補足的な調査を実施した。まず、日本国外で教室指導を受けている学習者(JFL)に対して発話調査を実施した。学習者の母語は、韓国語、中国語、英語で、発話能力は初級から中級であった。調査の結果、JFLの学習者が使用した否定表現は、日本国内で教室指導を受ける(JSL)学習者とほぼ同様の特徴があることが分かり、否定表現の全体的な習得過程は学習環境が国内か国外かという違いや学習者の母語にはあまり影響されないことが考えられた。しかし、JFLの環境では上級レベルまで到達する学習者が比較的少ないこと、また、これまでの研究結果のようにJSLの上級学習者が特徴的に使用する否定表現がJFLの上級学習者にはあまり観察されないことを考慮すると、学習環境は上級レベルの否定表現の産出において影響を与える可能性が残された。また、JSLの学習者に対する縦断的な調査の結果からも、母語は否定表現の習得過程そのものに影響を与えることはないと考えられた。このような結果から、否定表現の習得過程には、母語や学習環境の要因だけではなく、これらとは別のなんらかの認知的な要因が働いている可能性が考えられる。そこで、習得過程において否定辞「ない」「じゃない」「くない」の使用に制約を与えていると考えられる三つのストラテジーに注目し、これらが各習得段階でどのように作用しているのかについて検討した。その結果、ストラテジーの制約が段階的に取り除かれることによって、より複雑な表現が産出され、習得が進むと考えられた。このように、言語習得を認知的な側面から捉え直すことで、否定表現の習得過程に普遍的な説明を加えることができた。
