昨年度に引き続き、南方上座部(大寺派)の『分別論(Vibhanga)』、説一切有部の『法蘊足論(Dharmaskandha)』、法蔵部の『舎利弗阿毘曇論』に見られる各部派の縁起解釈を検討し、次の二点を明らかにした。1.いずれの論書も『マハー・ニダーナ(Maha-nidana)』という経典に説かれる縁起説を強く意識しており、そのことは、各論書がそれぞれ独自に発展する以前に共通の源泉資料として存在していた頃からすでに、当経典の縁起説が大きな問題となっていて、縁起説と輪廻の関係が解釈上の重要な論題となっていたことを示している。2.こうした議論の傾向こそが、後の論書における三世両重の因果の解釈、すなわち、十二支縁起は過去・現在・未来にわたって輪廻を繰り返す衆生の迷いの生存をあらわすものである、という解釈に連なっている。このように、それぞれの部派は縁起説を解釈する際に輪廻説に対する関心を共有しているのであるが、従来の縁起思想研究においては、縁起説が輪廻と関係するのかどうかという点をめぐって諸学者の見解が異なっていた。本年度は縁起思想に関する研究史についても吟味・検討したが、その作業の過程で、西洋の研究者が仏教思想に対していかに近代的な合理主義的精神をもってアプローチしたか、一方、そうした近代的な研究手法を日本の研究者はどのように受け入れ、同時にどのような内面的葛藤を抱えていたのかという問題を、特に近代仏教学の成立史上重要なF.マックス・ミュラー、南條文雄、笠原研寿の場合について明らかにした。その上で、仏教研究に対するこうした姿勢や方向性の違いが、従来の縁起研究における諸学者のさまざまな見解にも影響を与えていることを確認し、以上の知見を発表した。
