The purposes of this study were to assess how mothers were supported with regard to child-rearing by their mothers, how these mothers supported the rearing of their own grandchildren, and how the level of difference in each individuals support was recognized. The participants were 360 mothers with 5-year old children in Yamagata Pref, their own mothers, and their mothers-irr-law.The mothers recognized informational, emotional and instrumental support from their own mothers, were satisfied with this level of support, but also expected support from them. Their mothers offered the informational, emotional and instrumental support to their daughters with 5-year old children, but offered more support to those daughters who lived together with them than to those who lived separately. The grandmothers who offered support towards the rearing of their grandchildren bad more self-esteem and felt more satisfied with their lives. The support for grandchildren-rearing may have a positive influence on their own health condition. The mothers didn't expect support from their husbands' mothers although their husbands' mothers wanted to offer their support to them. The mothers expected support from their own mothers even when they lived separately but they didn't expect support from their husbands' mothers when they lived together. These results suggest that the grandmothers' support with regard to child-rearing is significant for the mothers with infants. Nurses have to identify the level of the mother's need and expectation of support based on the living conditions of the mothers.
