現在、文書館・博物館・図書館・研究機関・大学・企業などで構築されている様々な文化資源情報を、情報の構築サイドではなく、個別の利用者の視点を反映して効果的に利用・評価するための新しい機構を調査・研究することを目的としている。具体的には、ISOの標準として採用されたTopic Maps(ISO/IEC13250)を小規模なDB(データベース)に対して実験的に適用を開始した。今後、逐次実験規模を拡大することによって、Topic Mapの効果が期待されている大規模DBへの適用可能性を継続的に検証していく。今回は小規模データとして、既に筆者が蓄積した「源氏物語」の227枚の画像データと、日英仏ハイパーテキストデータを使用した。Topic Mapsの主唱者の一人であり、ISOのSC34のコンビーナでもあるSteve Pepper氏のTopic Maps作成手順に従って、Topic Maps作成のドメインの決定/分析、オントロジの作成、ツールの選択、既存データの利用方法の決定、及び、Topic Mapsの作成を行った。現在は、作成したTopic Mapsに対して、レビューと改善を繰り返している段階である。Topic Maps作成の負荷を軽減し、情報の利用者が自分の視点から容易にTopic Mapsの作成を可能にするため、専用のオーサリングツールを開発した。Steve Pepper氏とは良好な関係を保っており、彼もこのデータを使って実験をするなど、日本とノルウェイとの国際協力研究が確立しつつある。また、英米の会社にも日本語を含むTopic Mapsをサンプルとして提供している。そのため、今後、海外の人々が日本のDBを利用するケースのモデルとなりうる。2002年3月にシアトルで開催される国際会議(Knowledge Technologies 2002)に論文が通っており、日本人として始めてTopic Mapsの成果を発表することになっている。
