本研究は、図書館・研究機関・大学・企業などで構築されている様々な文化資源情報を、情報の構築サイドではなく、個別の利用者サイドから効果的に利用・評価するための新しい機構を調査・研究することを目的としている。具体的には、ISOの標準として採用されたTopic MapISO/IEC 13250)が、果たして上記の目的に有効であるかどうかを評価し、さらにその手法が大量の日本語による大規模データベースに対して適用するかどうかの調査・実験を行う。この実験には、既に申請者が蓄積し、ユネスコのウェッブである文学・古典の世界遺産サイト(http:/webworld.unesco.org/genji/shtml)から、2001年1月1日よりせ界に公開されている「源氏物語」の227枚の画像データと、日英仏ハイパーテキストデータを使用する。本年は、まず、研究の前半であるTopic Mapの調査をフランスで行なった。Topic Map発祥の地であるヨーロッパでは、デジタル・デバイス拡大に危機感を抱いており、フランスはTopic Map研究の中心地の一つである。更に、「源氏物語」をXMLデータに変換し、Topic Mapの小規模なDB(データベース)に対して実験的に適用を開始した。来年度は、逐次実験規模を拡大することによって、Topic Mapの効果が期待されている大規模DBへの適用可能性を継続的に検証していく。今回は、日本では、未だTopic Map用のソフトが無いため、同手法の主唱者の一人であり、ISOのSC34のコンビーナでもあるSteve Pepper氏のソフトを利用して実験した。意味論の枠組みを変え、様々な観点から「源氏物語」データの利用法を探り、同データベースが、日本国内のみならず、世界の人々に広く、多面的に利用できる方式を確立できれば、他の日本語データベースの世界利用にも拍車がかかると期待される。2002年1月17日には情報学研究所の研究集会で発表を行い、更に2002年3月にシアトルで開催された国際会議(Knowledge Technologies 2002)においても、日本人として始めてTopic Mapsの成果を発表した。
