A descriptive study of south Miyako-island dialect, in south Ryukyu dialect

Native speakers of Kurima island dialect are only several tens of people. They are over 60 years old. The number of the people is about 30. Under 60 years old peoples speak intermediate dialect of standard Japanese and traditional dialect.In fiscal 2001 and 2002 year we made twice investigations about phonetic features, grammar and words and described them.We heard the speach from the age of 70 and 80 years old men and women.The phonetic features are follows.Tere are 5 vovels and another one vowel. It is close central unrounded vowel with fricative.Not only close vowels but open vowel become voiceless. There are characteristic consonants. Voiceless labiodental fricative [f]. Voiced labiodental fricative [v] and syllabic [m]. Consonants [v,m] are syllabic.Those features are old Miyako dialect's features, that is losted in Hirara city speakers.In grammar, we described inflection forms of verb and adjective, and post positional particles, auxiliary verbs, expession of possible. And described the name of house.In autumn of 2002 year we recorded a speech on DAT tapes and video tapes.7 native speakers pronunciations are recorded. Witch includes phonetic features and grammatical features of Kurima island dialect. And we still recorded the Kurima's childrens song and the history of Kurima island peoples.These records are the first time in the study of Kurima island dialect.These records are important data of Kurima island dialect.
