Review of the Indo-Pacific genus Hapalogenys (Pisces Teleostei)

The genus Hapalogenys was reviewed from the Indo-West Pacific with a new species, their five species being generally antitropical distribution : Hapalogenys analis Richardson, 1845, H. australis n. sp., H. kishinouyei Smith and Pope, 1906, H. merguiensis Iwatsuki, Ukkrit and Amaoka, 2000, H. nigripinnis (Schlegel in Temminck and Schlegel, 1843) and H. sennin Iwatsuki and Nakabo, in press. Hapalogenys australis n. sp. was herein described from the 11 type specimens and are currently known only from Northwestern Australia and southern Indonesia. The new species has long been identified as H. kishinouyei with similar longitudinal dark stripes but the Northwest Australian and the true East Asian H. kishinouyei are easily separable in meristic counts, morphometric measurement and body color changes. The neotype of H. analis is designated. The six above congeners can be separable each other on the basis of counts, morphometric character, body color pattern, the largest sizes and distributional pattern.
