项目摘要

1.調査 10月に、パリ・ギメ国立東洋美術館と、ロンドン・大英博物館において、敦煌莫高窟将来の絹本画を調査し、計6例の十六観図について、調書と描き起こし図を作成した。また、比較研究のため、2月には、奈良国立博物館において奈良・阿弥陀寺本の観経十六観変相図を特別観覧し、写真撮影と調書の作成を行なった。2.研究成果の発表科学研究費補助金による研究会(研究課題名「交流と伝統の視点から見た仏教美術の研究-インドから日本まで-」研究代表者、名古屋大学大学院文学研究科教授、宮治昭、於名古屋大学、2004年11月14日)において、「敦煌絵画における十六観図について」と題し、成果の一部を発表した。すでに論文の執筆を終え、来年度の発表を予定している。3.得られた知見のまとめ (1)莫高窟の十六観図について、『観無量寿経』(以下、『観経』とする)との対応関係を軸に分類を試み、つぎの五種に分類した。すなわち、(A)配列・図像とも『観経』に一致するもの、(A')配列が乱れているもの、(Ax)配列・図像とも乱れているもの、(B)特徴ある図像を含むもの、(Bx)特徴ある図像を含み、かつ混乱がみられるもの、の五種である。(2)従来は、莫高窟において『観経』と乖離した十六観図は、中唐あるいは宋の時代に生み出されたとされてきたが、盛唐期にすでに『観経』とは一致しない作例が生み出されていることを指摘した。(3)画面形式に着目すると、莫高窟の十六観図は、(a)格子状区画のもの、(b)条幅状区画で自然景を背景とするもの、(c)条幅状区画で背景が無地に近いもの、の三種に分けられること、さらに、それらが(a)→(b)→(c)という変化を辿っていることを指摘した。(4)以上の知見から、従来古いとみられてきた莫高窟第217窟北壁の十六観図の位置づけを再検討し、形式的には莫高窟第171窟や第66窟の方が古いことを明らかにした。
