本研究では主として言語行為論とゲーム理論に基づき、会話を合理的な行為者が発語内行為(または非言語的な有意味行為)を用いて行なうゲームとして分析した。言語行為論では、話し手が行なう行為を発語行為・発語内行為・発語媒介行為に分類するが、発語媒介行為の結果部分において、聞き手は因果的に反応を示す場合と合理的に行為を選択する場合がある。後者の場合には、話し手の発語内行為に対して聞き手は合理的行為者として行為を行なっている。これは多くの会話に当てはまる。会話は話し手と聞き手の言語行為の連鎖であり、話し手と聞き手は合理的行為者として、相手の行為に対応して自己の行為を選択していると考えられる。つまり、会話は合理的に構成されていると言える。合理的に構成された会話はゲーム理論的なゲームとして分析できる。会話は言語行為からなる展開形ゲームであり、サブゲーム完全均衡の経路にそって展開する。複雑な会話の場合、人間は会話の全体を見渡せないため一定の水平線内で均衡経路をたどることになる。これは人工知能研究のミニマックス法による探索問題と同じである。水平線の限界上の局面をどう評価するかが問題となるが、局面を状況理論によって記述し、その状況に効用と確率を付値することで評価できる。つまり、会話の終端部分の諸状況の効用を所与とし、状況間の条件付確率を用いて水平線の限界上の局面の期待値を算出できる。以上の研究成果は、日本科学哲学会(2004年10月2日)、科学研究費補助金学術創成研究費「言語理解と行動制御」公開シンポジウム(2005年3月10日)、そしてアメリカ哲学会太平洋部会(American Philosophical Association Pacific Division)中に開かれた記号論理学会(Association for Symbolic Logic)(2005年3月26日)で発表された。
