In order to clarify the relationship between masticatory movement and brain blood flow the change of blood flow during unilateral chewing was investigated. Results was the following.For the 20 healthy subjects the deep blood flow of the temporal region significantly increased during mastication and decreased when mastication ceased and returned to its original state at three minutes after chewing. And the increase of brain blood flow of the non-chewing side was larger than that of the chewing side ; A statistically significant difference was found between the two.For the 20 healthy subjects the deep blood flow of the temporal region increased during mastication and decreased when mastication ceased and returned to its original state in both right and left side chewing. The amount of deep blood flow of the right temporal region was larger in the left side chewing (period B) than in the right side chewing (period A). On the other hand the amount of deep blood flow of the left temporal region was larger in the period A than in the period B. A statistically significant difference was found between the two periods.For the 10 healthy subjects the deep blood flow of the temporal region increased during mastication and decreased when mastication ceased and returned to its original state in both habitual and non-habitual side chewing. And the increase of brain blood flow for the habitual side chewing was significantly larger than that for the non-habitual side chewing.From these results it was suggested that the deep blood flow of the temporal region increase by mastication and the activation was probably strong in opposite side than in chewing side, and in habitual side chewing than in non-habitual side chewing.
