The purpose of this study was to examine ways in which cancer patients deal with alternative medicine and nurses' attitudes toward alternative medicine. This study aimed to clarify the roles and functions of nurses regarding alternative medicine, and to determine nursing interventions for cancer patients who have decided to undergo alternative treatmentsSixty-eight cancer patients were included in the study. An interview method was used to examine the situations in which the cancer patients chose to undergo alternative treatments, and qualitative analysis of interview data was then performed. In addition, regarding nurses' attitudes toward alternative medicine, a questionnaire survey was administered to 1, 154 nurses providing care to cancer patients in 223 facilities. Data were analyzed using the statistical software, SPSS10.0.The results of the questionnaire survey among cancer patients regarding alternative medicine clarified the patients' perception of the 'lightness' and 'darkness … More of alternative medicine. In addition, the results demonstrated the importance of "connecting people" through alternative medicine and those factors affecting the decision to undergo alternative treatment. The survey examining nurses' attitudes toward alternative medicine clarified the current status of alternative medicine, attitudes of nurses toward alternative medicine, and the role of nurses in caring for cancer patients who have decided to undergo alternative treatments.These two surveys indicate that the ideal nursing interventions for cancer patients who decide to undergo alternative treatment are as follows : 1. Showing an attitude of understanding toward patients who make positive efforts to undergo treatment in order to continue living ; 2. Providing appropriate information according to patients' hopes and values, and supporting patients by allowing them to make their own decisions ; 3. Protecting patients and family members from modalities that would not benefit them ; 4. Making efforts to ensure that support networks, including links between family and health-care providers, function sufficiently ; and 5. Clarifying the beliefs of nurses regarding alternative medicine. Less
