项目摘要

本研究では今日のグラフィックデザインにおいて、伝統的なイメージがどのように引用され、改変され、新たな表現を形成してきたかを考察することが目的であった。そこで、明治以後、今日に至るまでの日本におけるグラフィックデザインの流れをおおまかに3つに区分することとした。まず、明治維新以降、日本の近代化政策の中で江戸末期までに構築されたイメージとの相克、あるいは継承。次に西洋から流入したアールヌーヴォー、アールデコ、それに続くモダニズムの影響をうけた大正、昭和初期から第二次世界大戦にいたる、さまざまなデザイン様式の影響を受けた時期。そして戦後、新たな社会状況の中で芽生えた新しい広告やグラフィックデザインの形式と、国際社会に向けて発信されるナショナリズムの表現。この分類に基づき、特にポスターを中心に印刷技術との関連に重点を置き、イメージの分類、表現の特質、技法や紙質についての調査を試みた。とくに、今回の研究においては日本的な伝統的イメージとしての「諧調表現」に着目し、その用いられ方、表現の特質および由来、原画作成技法ならびに製版・印刷技法の研究をし、そのポスターの伝達内容と「諧調表現」との関連性について考察を進めた。さらに本研究と並行して実際のポスターデザインを作成するにあたり、いくつかの伝統的イメージの引用を試みた。
