本年度は、社会的引きこもりに関わる民間支援グループに対して参与観察を中心的に行った。主たる知見として、「引きこもり」者たちの社会的なカテゴライズの仕方が、当該グループのリハビリ活動においてきわめて重要な問題であったことが挙げられる。たとえば、彼らを「病人」とカテゴライズした場合、通学・就労の免除を社会的に是認され易く、行政的支援も得やすいことになる。しかし、リハビリ的観点からみると、当人たちの自己効力感そして"自力回復"の意思が必要と考えられる。そのためには、「病人」といういわば"脱力化"カテゴリーは回避したい。本研究は、こうしたジレンマを孕んだカテゴリー化を準拠問題とした場合、メディア言説や専門家言説が、当の支援活動に対してもつ意味を分析した(一部は、2002年11月に日本社会学会大会にて報告した)。メディア言説空間では、引きこもり者を病者というより、「コミュニケーションに躓いた者」として語るものが多い。これは往々にして「単なる甘え」という社会的反応を引き起こす。また、彼らの「向/反社会性」が問題になりやすい。傷害事件と「引きこもり」が連結されることで、当人たちを反社会的存在とみる言説が一定数存在した。こうしたメディア・イメージは支援活動において、ときに地域住民の理解を得にくいものにしていた。精神医学などの専門家による言説では、非「精神病」性と定義しつつ、治療・介入には慎重さを望む議論も多い。しかし、専門用語(e. g. 人格障害)でカテゴライズしていく傾向は見られる。こうした用語が、マス・メディアや親の会で流用される場合、<病人(あるいは逸脱者)>という解釈図式が発動されやすかった。支援活動において、当人たちの"診断名"が対行政的に必要な場合など、彼らの自己定義に損傷を与えないための工夫(診断がなされる場所を操作するなど)が見出されたが、これは、上述の言説環境のもとでの、カテゴリーの管理戦略と解釈しえた。
