(1)悲嘆研究の整理入所型社会福祉施設における分離と悲嘆に関する先行研究の整理を行い、分離の前後における援助として議論されていることを指摘した。そのうえで、利用者が入所後に体験する可能性のある分離体験を整理するとともに、悲嘆を入所からの一連の連続性のなかで捉えていく必要性を主張した。(2)悲嘆に関する調査結果とそこから得られた知見施設児童の悲嘆は、理由が不確かで、複雑な悲嘆であるがゆえに、通常の悲嘆過程を経ないのではないかという仮説のもと調査を行い、次の結果が得られた。(1)悲しみといった情緒で表出されるのではなく、睡眠時の夜驚等の身体症状に表れていると考えられた。(2)施設児童のなかには、施設入所によって親から分離された状況を喪失と受けとめず、自らの存在に合致するようなストーリーを構成しているものがいた。結論は次の通りである。安定的な愛着形式による対象の内在化によって喪失による悲嘆が生じると考えられる。だが、施設児童の場合、入所前の親の関係を求めても受けとめてもらえないことの結果として施設に入所している。したがって、悲嘆が深い状態にある、もしくは分離を受け入れることができない状態にあることが考えられる。そこで、求められる援助としては次のものが指摘できる。日常生活における安定した対象関係の提示及び愛着関係の再形成によって、分離以前の安定的な対象の不在を補う。さらに、子ども自身の分離によるストーリーが子どもの精神的な安定との関連での意味を検討し、それにそった援助を展開する。
