研究の背景:地場産業を取り巻く近代化(グローバル化)の中で、具体的には酒税の上昇に伴う値上げおよび廃棄物の海洋投棄禁止措置による、売り上げ減やコストアップによる各企業の対応状況を探ること。平成13年度:鹿児島県に根付いている地場産業である焼酎醸造業の生き残り策の実状を探る目的で、ヒアリングによる聞き取り調査を実施した。ヒアリングには先方の許可を得て録音機器(科研申請備品)を用い、おおむね1時間ほどを費やした。対象は、離島部や小規模の企業に限定した。以上で得られた知見は、以下の通りであった。1.酒税上昇による売り上げ減は明確にあらわれるほどのものではなかった。2.離島部では人口流出による消費の伸び悩みが深刻になりつつある。3.産業廃棄物(「焼酎かす」)の海洋投棄禁止措置については影響を受ける醸造所とそうでない醸造所に分かれる。平成14年度:昨年度同様の視点で、質問紙調査を実施して回収結果による定量的分析をおこなった。今年度になり、業界の動きに変化がみられた。それは、大手資本との提携による市場開拓や大都市向けの商品開発が活発化による、従来の地場産業の枠組みの変容とよぶべき現象であると考えられる。こうした背景をうけて、昨年と同様に対象を変えてのヒアリングも実施した。また、質問紙の分析によれば、大手企業(酒造会社や総合商社)との提携には、賛否両論であるも、コスト増や販路開拓などの投資を考えるとやむを得ない選択であるという傾向がうかがえた。地方都市の独自性を維持した産品を支える産業も、コスト競争の激化に加えて後継者不足といった地方都市固有の苦境にあえいで、現時点で存続を図るために、独自の販路開拓(インターネットの利用や販路開拓ルートの模索)や大手企業との提携などの二極化した様相をみせているのである。
