前年度に引き続き平成14年度もキューバ国にて現地調査を実施し、研究課題について、以下のような暫定的結論に至った。1.1990年代以降の外貨ドルの流入と限定的市場経済の導入は、サンテリーアの儀礼の貨幣取引を促し、いわゆる信仰の「商品化」を引き起こしてきた。この傾向に対し「信仰への冒涜である」といった否定的見解がひろく共有される一方で、儀礼が外貨によって価値付けられることによって、儀礼の価値が再発見され、質・量の両面で信仰そのものを活性化させてきたというアンチノミーが観察される。しかし、信仰者の間では、両者の矛盾が先鋭化して捉えられることはない。2.信仰をめぐる知識体系においては、崇拝対象である複数のサントを包括的に価値付け=意味付ける「至高神=超越的シニフィアン」の存在が、きわめて重要な位置を占めている。しかし、入信儀礼にあたる「サントを作る=物質化する」実践においては、「至高神」の存在は無化あるいは曖昧化され、以後信仰者の幸・不幸を左右するのも、至高神ではなく、「物質化」されたサントと信者の関わりのあり方だとされる。3.1における「貨幣」と「商品」の関係と、2における「至高神」と「サント」の関係は、「シニフィアン」と.「シニフィエ」の弁証法的無限循環として、相互に構造的相同性を有している。信仰の「商品化」をめぐる観察者にとってのアンチノミーが、信仰者にとって決定的な矛盾とみなされないのは、ドル経済という新たな事態が、信仰内論理のズレを含みこんだ反復として捉えられたためだと推論できる。研究代表者は、以上の詳細を、「研究発表」の項に挙げた図書の担当部分で、「神々の<物質化>」と題して公表した。また、代表者は現在、キューバ版社会主義の科学的唯物論と、サンテリーア信仰における「物質」概念の相互連関について、研究を継続中である。
