上肢の先天異常の過去の症例を集計した。主に研究代表者、荻野利彦が経験した症例を中心に、できる限り多くの症例を集めた。これらの症例を日本手の外科学会Swanson修飾分類に基づいて、診断を行い、分類した。症例のデータを集め、デジタル化し、コンピューターに記憶させた。遺伝性の有無についても記載した。また、症例の外観やX線像のスライドをデジタル化し、コンピューターに記憶させた。2000年に研究代表者荻野利彦が主催した第5回上肢先天異常国際シンポジウムではProceedingsが作成された。このProceedingsは本学会の参加者に配布されたが、非参加者からの購読希望が多数あったため、追加作成が必要であった。上肢先天異常国際シンポジウムの内容をより多くの医師に公開する目的で、Proceedingsの追加作成を行い、国内および国外の上肢先天異常の専門医に配布した。同時に、上肢先天異常の原因遺伝子解明の国際共同研究の呼びかけを行った。研究代表者の荻野利彦は、Congenital Hand Anomalies Study Groupに所属する医師ら(アメリカ、イギリス、フランス、ドイツ、フィンランド、オーストラリア、中国)に、研究の内容の一部を紹介した。国際共同研究の発起を呼びかけた。
