去年度は日米の石油産業、特に卸・小売りガソリン市場のデータを利用する事によって、契約形態の違いが経済活動にどのように影響するかを分析した(この研究は成蹊大学経済学部の井上氏との共同論文となり、現在投稿中)。米国を扱ったBorenstein and Shard (Rand Journal of Economics,1996)の研究では、需要の変化に対し小売企業のマージンがprocyclicalな動きをする事が示された。我々の論文では、むしろ日本ではcountercyclicalな動きとなる事を示した。今年度は、「企業間契約等における日米の構造の違いによって、外性的なショック(需要、原油価格の変化等)が経済にどのような影響を与えるか」という視点から、前記論文を補完する研究を進めた。Borenstein、Cameron, and Gilbert(Quarterly Journal of Economics,1997)によると、米国市場における原油価格の変化の効果は、その方向(上昇か減少か)によって影響のasymmetryが存在する。即ち、原油価格が上がる場合はそれに会わせて卸・小売価格も連動するものの、下がる場合の価格の反応は(相対的に)鈍いという事である(この点は、他の市場を扱ったPeltzman(Journal of Political Economy,2000)によっても「一般的に観察される現象である」と指摘されている)。井上氏との共同論文「Do Prices Rise Faster than They Fall?」において、日本市場においては効果がむしろ逆である事を示した。すなわち、「原油価格の減少」の方が「上昇」よりも相対的に早い反応を示す。これは、日米の石油産業における(企業間契約形態を含む)構造の差に起因していると考えられる。完成稿をrefereed journalへ投稿する予定である。

Analysis of the impact of the oil industry, special market conditions, and market conditions on the oil industry in the past year (joint paper by Inoue, Faculty of Economics, Seikei University, now in submission).
