今年度は中国・近畿地方の日本海側の縄文・弥生時代の磨石類・右皿の調査を行い、全体を総括した。また、研究方法として形態の把握にかかわる部分においてZinggの図表を採用した。これは地質学において河川転礫の形状を示すのに用いられているものである。この図表と図表により分類できた形態の重量構成の検討から、磨石類の分類と時期的変遷、機能の推定に成果をあげることができた。磨石類について使用痕により8種類に分類したが、このうち形態と重量構成から製粉具の可能性が高いものは典型的な磨石が持つ凸面傾向の磨面、そして凹面傾向の磨面の一部とアバタ状敲打痕の一部のものである。凸面傾向の磨面を持つ石器について具体的に見れば、縄文早期に出現し、前期、中期にかけて磨面が次第に球面化する。また磨面の状況から石器の使用方法が一定方向の前後運動(早期・前期)から円運動を含めた不定方向の運動(中期以降)に変化する。これは製粉技術の発達を示すと考えられた。また、凸面傾向の磨面を持つ石器は縄文後期に大型のものが出現するが、これは製粉対象の変化ではなく、製粉作業を行う集団の変化によるものと考えた。そして弥生時代に入り、日本海側や西部瀬戸内などの一部の地域に残る。しかし残存する地域では特に微粉化のできる形態が残り、それは雑穀を栽培する地域に多いようである。凹面傾向の磨面とアバタ状敲打痕の一部に関しては実際の使用面を検討したところ、製粉には不向きでありそのように評価できなかった。また赤色顔料、特に朱の製粉具については岩を砕く生産地遺跡の石器と朱を溶く程度の集落遺跡の石器は全く異質であることを明らかにできた。
