平成15年度は、本研究の目標である平安文学における仏教思想と日本固有思想との混淆状況の解明に向け、『源氏物語』を主たる対象として検討した。具体的には、作中人物明石の入道における住吉信仰と仏教信仰との関係を考察した。極楽往生を目指す出家者でありながら在俗時以来の住吉信仰を貫く人物が。物語に描かれているのである。『源氏物語』の作中人物明石の入道の信仰に関する先行研究には、丸山キヨ子氏の論考があり、重要な論点がすでに指摘されている。しかし、丸山氏の論述は『源氏物語』に純粋な仏教信仰を読み取ろうとする方向で進められていて、明石の入道の住吉信仰を妥協の産物のように扱う傾きがみられる。物語の叙述に従えば、住吉信仰と仏教思想との一人物における複合を、より積極的に解釈すべきだと考えられるのである。神道思想、仏教思想に共通する護国的、皇室守護的性格が核となって両思想が複合し、一人物の中でさらに自身の極楽往生までもが連続してとらえられているところに、『源氏物語』が語る明石の入道の信仰の特質がある。これが私の検討の結論である。平成14年度の本研究において、中世の諸資料にみられる神仏習合思想の形成過程を検討し、平安時代の著名な知識人における神仏の関わり方が、平安時代の神仏混淆状況を理解する上で重要だと見通しておいた。住吉信仰と仏教との関係については、『古今著聞集』等にみられる円仁と住吉神との関わり方が参照できる。そこでは、国家と仏教をともに守護する存在としての住吉神が示されていた。『源氏物語』についての上記の結論も、こうした思想史の中に位置づけられるのである。
