本研究の最初の計画は、平安時代における日本の仏教絵画の中の、風景の表現について検討することだった。風景表現の研究に必要なさまざまな背景について、分析する過程で、高野山霊宝館に所蔵されている金剛峯寺本「応徳涅槃図」の研究に出会った。この仏教絵画の傑作に捧げられた膨大な研究を支えにしつつ、沙羅双樹の木の幹に描かれた「亀甲文」の解釈から出発し、これまであまり触れられてこなかった涅槃図における様式と表現のあり方を考察した。大胆な試みではあるが、この新しい考察の糸口は次のような二つの言葉に要約できる。すなわち、道教の染み込んだ中国の占星学における「北の方角/玄武」と、同じく中国において、その形を表す表意文字から直接「亀甲文」を生み出した動物、「亀」である。本研究ではこうした宇宙観の影響力を考慮しつつ、白河上皇の下での陰陽師の役割についても考えながら、形式的にも図像的にも、この絵画が宮廷的な趣味や世俗的な絵画の傾向と結びつくと考えられる点を明示した。そこでまず、空間構成と数々のモチーフの図像的解釈から、仏教的、陰陽道的、占星術的といった、様々な意味の層を解明し、そしてまた、こうした多様な意味の層が如何にして対立することなく、逆にこの時代の精神が好んだように、互いに調和し融合していたかを検討した。また、空間構成や絵画的記号、何らかの人物やモチーフの存在を通して、「応徳涅槃図」と、星への信仰に結びついた図像との融和を分析することは、他の仏教図像の宗教的、そしてイコノロジー的な面での理解に、新しい道を開くことにつながるであろう。院政時代、特に白河上皇の近辺で盛んに起こったような、終末論的な信仰、またこの時代に現れた陰陽道と密教の融合は、死に対する思想、宇宙観、そして何より延命への渇望を鼓舞する涅槃図と星曼荼羅の図像を、互いに結び付ける役割を果たしたと考えることが可能となるのではないだろうか。
