项目摘要

平成16年度は、江戸時代の宗統復古運動の中心人物「面山瑞方」に焦点を当て、仏教の戒律関係、特に受戒についての研究を行った。面山瑞方は、嗣法の乱れを正し、道元禅師の示した面授嗣法の精神に帰るべきことを主張した僧侶である。面山瑞方に関する資料を調査するため、駒澤大学等の図書館で木版や書物資料の調査を行うとともに、地方の寺院の調査も行った。具体的には、小浜市の空印寺と永福庵にある面山瑞方の遺跡を調査し、併せて住職、壇家に聞き取り調査を行った。その成果の一つは、小浜市の空印寺で、面山瑞方に関する資料を発見できたことである。その資料をもとに、宗統復古運動の中で面山瑞方が道元禅師の教えとした受戒を行う時期に関する研究を行った。曹洞宗の儀式の中で戒律、特に禪戒は、江戸時代から曹洞宗の重要な特徴である。そこで、大本山永平寺に行き、一週間の授戒會に参加した。そして平信徒達と僧尼達に聞き取り調査を行った。同時に、アメリカの平信徒達や僧尼達に協力をお願いし、アメリカの曹洞宗の授戒會についての資料も調べた。その結果、特に日本とアメリカは、短期に大きな差異が発生したということが明らかになった。これについては、American Academy of Religionの禅ゼミにおいて発表を行った。浄土宗と真言宗が現在、授戒會の重要性を出張している。そこで、当宗の受戒教理と儀式を調査するとともに住職に聞き取り調査を行った。とりわけ黄蘗宗と真言宗が曹洞宗について影響が強いので、三宗派を対比して研究を行った。また、江戸時代の漢文と古典を翻訳し、その歴史的背景を研究して、これに基いた記事と論文を発表した。
