今年度は前年度に引き続き、日本の近代を代表する画家たちの渡満体験の具体像を究明するため、旧「満洲」美術の背景に関わる諸様相を、旧「満洲」国展の図録、当時現地で発行される新聞、雑誌を中心として資料蒐集を行った。そのため、中国の東北地方及び日本国内の図書館を中心にとする調査旅行をし、旧「満洲」美術、文化政策及び近代日本人画家の渡満体験に関する資料を一部蒐集できた一方で、日本国内の資料を中心に、戦時中渡満した画家の足跡を辿ると同時に、戦争画というジャンルに対する画家たちの認識を確認できた。また、香港で開かれた比較文学会第17回国際会議、長春で開かれた「近代中国東北部文化国際シンポジウム」に参加した。香港の学会では近代文学、文化を専門とする中国の研究者と意見交換し、「近代中国東北部文化国際シンポジウム」には、コメンテーターとして出席し、同時に旧「満洲」の文芸に巡る諸相について、シンポジウムに参加した旧満洲文化人の方々にインタービューをすることができ、旧「満洲」時代の芸術に対する時代背景など貴重な話を聞くことができた。また、これまでの研究成果を生かして近代中国初の絵入り新聞と日本との関係を取り上げた石暁軍著『『点石斎画報』にみる明治日本』(東方書店、2004年2月)の書評を「絵入り新聞に読む清末庶民の日本観」(『アジア遊学』第64号、勉誠出版、2004,7)に発表した。
