项目摘要

論文「浅田栄次の谷本富批判」では、浅田栄次と谷本富の宗教と教育の衝突を巡る論争を中心に、浅田栄次の説教原稿などを手がかりに、明治時代における「宗教と教育」についての理念を比較検討した。さらに浅田栄次の主張した高等批評が日本のキリスト教界でいかに受容されたかを明らかにした。明治時代は日本における近代教育の設立と発展の過程において、「宗教と教育」の関係についてのさまざまな議論がなされた。キリスト教主義教育を主張し同志社を設立した新島襄、また『学問のすすめ』を著し慶応義塾を中心に教育界に大きな影響を与えた福沢諭吉、また『教育と宗教の衝突』をめぐって対立した井上哲次郎・内村鑑三・植村正久・大西祝らの思想的相克が考察された。浅田栄次の手紙、日記、辞令、メモなどの未発表の資料をなるべく多く用いて、浅田栄次に影響を与えた明治時代のキリスト教思想の関わり、「宗教と教育」に関する議論を比較検討した。論文「平井金三とユニテリアニズム」においては仏教の国際化を目指して万国宗教大会において活躍した平井金三を中心に、明治期キリスト教界における新神学の受容と影響に関して、明治時代のキリスト教会に動揺を引き起こしたユニテリアニズムやドイツ新神学の思想史的比較を行った。ユニテリアニズムから社会主義運動に加わった村井知至・安部磯雄らの思想を検討し、金森通倫・松村介石など新神学の影響によりキリスト教界を離脱していった人達の思想を研究した。
