日本人移民の渡米や日系アメリカ人二世の来日に関する史料収集・分析をさらに進めることができた。これまでの研究調査の成果の一部として、後期博士課程終了報告論文を執筆した。20世紀前半の日米間の越境的・国境交差的な人の移動、理念、組織の歴史的研究を、従来の一国史観の枠を超えたトランスナショナルな枠組みを用いてまとめた。論文の第1章では、日本YWCAが"emigration work"と呼んだ「渡航婦人講習」に注目した。日本人初の日本YWCA総幹事を務めた河合道(1877-1953)が中心的な役割を果たした。YWCA幹部は、日本人女性の移民という過程に自らの解釈を与え利用価値を見出し、トランスナショナルなキリスト教ネットワークを最大限に活用し、自分たちの活動発展の場を創出したと論じた。第1章ではアメリカへ向かった日本人移民をめぐる活動に注目したが、第2章では二世の来日をめぐる議論--とくに懸け橋論--に焦点をあてた。さらに最後の章では、東京に留学した二世を受け入れていた代表的な学校について触れ、そのひとつで河合が設立した恵泉女学園の留学生科に、河合のキリスト教を基盤としたトランスナショナルなネットワークや河合の懸け橋論がいかに織り込まれたかを分析した。また恵泉の二世留学生の最近のインタビューにも触れ、河合の懸け橋論が二世学生の間にいかに浸透していたかをとりあげた。トランスナショラナルな枠組みを用いることにより、一国史観を超越した現象や意思を考察することができた。今後、複数国家・地域にまたがるトランスナショナルなネットワークや議論についてもっと調べ、トランスナショナリズムの多様性について論じ、そしてトランスナショナルな歴史研究・移民研究のさらなる発展に貢献したい。
