初年度は、研究計画のうち、16世紀京都の実態を明らかにした。内容は以下の通りである。本研究ではこれまで分析が十分に行われていない応仁の乱後京都の復興過程を、宗教・信仰、具体的には御霊信仰・祇園会を中心に検討した。まず、応仁の乱後京都で、火災、強盗、疫病が相次ぐ<第二の罹災>というべき状況に置かれたことを、これまで正面から分析されなかった疫病を中心に分析し、その中で流行神、御霊信仰の流行や法華宗の台頭が見られたことを指摘した。とりわけ御霊信仰をめぐっては、朝廷、幕府、<地下人>の多様な動向が確認できる。次に御霊信仰のうちの祇園会の再建過程をもとに、幕府、<地下人>の動向を検討した。明応三年の大火で罹災した<地下人>は祇園神への信仰を高め、御霊信仰の下で風流というかたちで祇園会の再建をはかっていた。一方、幕府も御霊信仰と権力の荘厳という立場から、明応九年に山鉾を中心とする再建を行った。復興途上の<地下人>からすれば、山鉾の出仕は困難であったが、御霊信仰を背景に寄町というかたちで町同士が合力して鉾を維持し、一六世紀中葉までには山鉾の運営を軸に、独自の財源や規則を設けて町共同体の内実を整えていったのである。このように御霊信仰を背景に、一致して祇園会を行った幕府と<地下人>であったが、一六世紀中葉までにはその矛盾も顕著になる。幕府は明応の再興以降、祇園会に対する権力の荘厳という側面を強め、具体的にはそれを乱前のように、武家儀礼、年中行事化していた。しかし、このことは御霊信仰の稀薄化を意味し、天文二年には、幕府の山鉾出仕要請に対して、<地下人>は難渋するなど、両者の乖離が顕著になった。政局の不安定化により幕府は在京すらままならない中で、<地下人>はそれを独自の祭礼として位置づけていった。従来、このような<地下人>の自律的傾向は、発展段階的に把握されていたが、それは当時の政治、社会状況とも密接に関わり形成されたのである。以上の内容を含む報告を、5月と8月にそれぞれ、名古屋・仙台にて行った。現在、論文を執筆中である。
