本年度には主に初期イスラーム時代におけるアラブ・ビザンティン貨幣ついて古銭学的方法による研究及び歴史学的方法による文献研究を行なった。本年度の前半期には、先行研究においても見解が分かれ、未だ議論が続けられているアラブ・ビザンティン貨幣の発行年代について整理し、アブド・アルマリクのイスラーム式貨幣への改革との関連を踏まえた上で、それがウマイヤ朝期シリア社会という文脈の中でどのように位置づけられるかを検討した。その成果の一部は「七世紀後半シリアにおけるアラブ・ビザンティン貨幣発行の年代をめぐって」として『北大史学』第四十四号に発表した。本年度の後半期には、アラブ・ビザンティン貨幣、およびアラブ・サーサーン貨幣に刻まれた銘文の研究を行い、特にそこに見られる初期イスラーム時代のカリフの称号についての研究を進めた。これは、貨幣史料に見られるカリフの称号としての「神の僕」に着目することによって、初期イスラーム時代のカリフの多面的性格を見直し、今までのイスラーム世界における伝統的なカリフ観とイスラーム史料に懐疑的な研究者のカリフ観の対立を解決することを試みたものである。この研究成果は「「信徒の長」「神の僕」「神の代理」-初期イスラーム時代におけるカリフ概念の再検討-」として北海道大学東洋史談話会で発表したほか、改訂を加えた上で2005年5月に開催される第21回日本中東学会年次大会でも報告することを予定している。またこれに関連して、2005年1月から2月にかけてエジプト・アラブ共和国に滞在し、エジプト国立図書館(Dar al-Kutubal-Misriyah)において調査を行い、貨幣史料と比較対照することのできる碑文史料等の銘文資料の収集を行った。
