日本での異文化受容態度の調査研究からは、異文化受容態度が生育環境の多文化性と深い関わりを持っていると考えられた。また、自尊心が高い人は異文化受容態度、愛国心共に高いという結果を得た。そこで昨年度末から本年度にかけて、ドイツ及び英国で調査を行い、日本との比較を行った。結果、ドイツ、英国では生育環境の多文化性と異文化受容には関係がなく、3カ国の比較からも環境の多文化性と異文化受容態度が単純な比例関係にはないと示された。恐怖管理理論の観点から考えると、異文化は自文化の普遍性を脅かす存在であり、異文化の受容には高く安定した自尊心の維持による死の脅威の抑制が必要である。よって、自尊心は死の脅威を低減することを介し、異文化受容態度を促進すると予測された。3カ国比較においてこの仮説の検証を行ったところ、英国、ドイツではこの仮説がほぼ支持された。日本では、仮説を支持する結果も得られる場合もあったが、支持しない場合もあった。日本は独英と比べ、多文化性が低いことから、異文化受容態度は自尊心を高める望ましい態度とは認識されるものの、異文化受容はあくまで仮定の話であり、異文化や外国人による自文化への脅威について十分に実感されていない可能性が考えられる。日本の異文化受容態度についてより詳しく調査を行うため、異文化受容態度尺度の改訂版を作成し、再度質問紙調査を行った。異文化受容態度尺度の下位尺度として「否定的態度」「緊張」「個人的受容」「一般的受容」という4つが測定された。特に、外国人と友人になりたいと思う個人的受容や外国人を前にすると緊張してしまうという態度に関しては、環境の都鄙性に関わらず、これまでの異文化接触経験の多さが大きな影響を与えていた。また、実際の行動について聞き取り調査を行ったところ、実際に行動に結びつく人の特徴としては、否定的態度と緊張が低く、2つの受容尺度の値が高いことが示唆された。
