Compound 1 (4-(3,4,5-tridodecyloxyphenylmethoxy)-3,5-bis(propenoyloxymethyl)benzoic acid) was synthesized and mixed with core compounds to give supermolecular liquid crystalline compounds. The liquid crystallinity was identified and the properties and superstructure were investigated. Further, their homologue, complexes of compound 2 (4-(3,4,5-trihexadodecyloxy-phenyl-methoxy)-3,5-bis(propenoyloxymethyl)benzoic acid) were also synthesized and their phase behaviors and superstructures, were investigated. As the core compounds, were used pyrimidine, dipyridyl,1,2-dipyridylethane,1-2-dipyridylethene,1,3,5-tris(4-pyridyhnethyloxycarbonyl)benzene. The 2:1 complexes of 1 with 1,2-dipyridylethane and 1,2-dipyridylethene, and the 3:1 complex of 1 with(1,3,5-tris(4-pyridylmethyloxycarbonyl)benzene showed columnar liquid crystal phases in polarized optical microscopy. The 2:1 mixture of 1 and 2 with 1,2-dipyridylethane were coated on a glass plate, respectively, and photopolymerized by a UV-lamp. The X-ray diffraction study of the polymers indicated that the superstructure of the 2:1 mixture of 1 and 1,2-dipyridylethane was maintained after the polymerization and that of 2 and 1,2-dipyridylethane was lost. The thin polymer film of 1 with 1,2-dipyridylethane was washed with hydrochloric acid to remove the core compounds, which was monitored by an X-ray diffractometer. After the washing, the core molecules are removed and the column diameter was decreased. The core compounds, 1,2-dipyridylethane, was put on the thin film. However, the core compounds was not absorbed in the film at all. Then, 1,2-diaminoethane was put on the film and absorbed in the filme. The diameter of the columns were increased with inclusion of the guest molecules.
