本研究プロジェクトの目的は大きく以下の二つであった。第一は、大規模な移民の到来が問題化された19世紀末から20世紀初頭を中心に人種主義と移民排斥主義の関係を再検討することで、20世紀後半以降の状況を相対化/歴史化することであった。この点に関しては、岩波書店の雑誌『思想』にて刊行予定の論文、「『人種化されたネイティヴィズム』の史的背景:19-20世紀転換期アメリカのネイティヴィズムをめぐる議論の批判的再検討」にて詳述した。そして、第二が、20世紀後半以降、特に1965年移民法制定以降に急増した西インド諸島からアメリカ東海岸(とりわけニューヨーク)への移民が、従来の人種主義と移民排斥主義の関係にどのような影響を与えたのかを分析することであった。具体的には、黒人=非移民とする認識枠組みが依然として強いなかで、黒人移民の増加が移民排斥主義の対象として黒人住民を巻き込んでいったのか否か、またその際、長い歴史を持つ黒人に対する人種主義はどのように作用したのか、黒人移民自身の内面世界やアイデンティティはどのようなものであったのか等が中心的な問いであった。この第二の論点群に関しては、残念ながら今年度においては、先行研究を批判的に再検討するにとどまってしまった感は否めない。だが、同テーマのさらなる追求がアメリカの人種・エスニック関係(史)認識を強く規定している「白か黒かの二分法」を相対化する可能性を秘めていることも、そうした先行研究批判を通じて明らかとなった。なお、その点は、2003年9月にノースキャロライナ大学チャペルヒル校で開催されたシンポジウムでの講演、およびそれが活字化されたプロシーディングス、「Searching for a Framework for a Synthetic Understanding of Post-1965 Immigration from the Western Hemisphere」にて分析を展開している。

The purpose of this study is to improve the quality of the products. First, the arrival of large-scale immigrants has become a problem. From the end of the 19th century to the beginning of the 20th century, the relationship between ethnicism and immigration exclusion has been re-examined. From the second half of the 20th century, the situation has become relatively historical. This point is related to the publication of a predetermined paper in the journal "Thought" of Iwawa Bookstore,"Background of the History of Ethnization: A Reexamination of the Criticism of Ethnization in the 19th-20th Century". In the second half of the 20th century, the Immigration Act of 1965 was enacted to reduce the number of immigrants from the West to the East Coast. The specific, black = non-immigrant, cognitive group is still strong, black immigration is increasing, the object of immigrant exclusionism is black people's history, the long history of black people's racism is still working, black immigration itself is the inner world, and so on.
