今年度は、8月、12月、2月、3月にインドネシアのバリ島の美術高校がどのようにして地域との関係のもとで誕生し、運営されてきたのかという点について、聞き取り調査を行った。バリで活躍する画家の多くは美術高校出身者である。美術高校デンパサール校の初代の生徒は8名であった。その多くはバリ美術界の重鎮となっている。例えば、現代美術作家のマデ・ウィアンタ氏、美術高校ウブドゥ校校長を務めたワヤン・シカ氏、バリ州文化庁長官、教育文化省長官、アートセンター長、美術高校校長を歴任したニコナヨ氏などは初代の生徒である。一方、美術高校ウブドゥ校の初代出身者のカトゥット・ブディアナ氏は、伝統美術の巨匠として東京ステーションギャラリーで個展を行い、スペインやデンマークの芸術祭などに招聘されている。その一方で、祝祭における牛の棺や、寺の彫刻などを行うサンギンとして活躍し、美術高校の教員としても多くの画家を育ててきた。美術高校は、伝統画、近代画、現代美術、彫刻、メディア、祝祭や寺の装飾、行政組織、学校など多様な分野で、バリ美術界を支え、新たな流れを生み出す人々を輩出してきた。彼らの学習過程についてインタビューを行ったところ、彼ら自身が、「第二の母」と呼ぶ教員が存在したことが明らかになった。美術高校デンパサール校のカジェン女史である。カジェン女史は、ジャワ島の美術学院の初代の学生として学び、美術高校の創設に尽力し、長年、校長を努めた。バリ美術館で勤務し、アートセンターの長も勤めた。しかし、すでに故人であるカジェン女史についてはほとんど書かれた資料として残っていない。当時、カジェン女史と共に美術高校を設立した画家のワヤン・カヨ氏や、友人の画家カルティカ・アファンディや親族、生徒、元同僚などにインタビュー調査を行った。美術高校の創設に携わったのは、バリ州知事や、バリの文化戦略を立てる行政組織の長などであった。こうした行政組織に焦点を当てた場合、あたかも行政組織が学校を生み出したかのように見える。しかし、文化戦略を立てる省庁の担当者ワヤン・カヨ氏はカジェンの大学時代の同窓生であった。また、バリ州知事もオランダ学校時代の同窓生であった。ワヤン・カヨ氏によれば、自分は画家なので画家を育てる学校を設立したかったという。このように、行政文書だけではなく、担当者のライフヒストリーを聞き取ることで、学校教育の階梯を辿る過程で生まれた小さな共同体が、美術高校をめぐる複数の共同体から成るバリ美術界の誕生の母体の一つであったことが明らかになった。また、美術高校の教員や卒業生が、スイスのバーセル市の民族博物館、オランダの熱帯美術館、日本の福岡アジア美術館などの多様な地域との相互作用のもとで複数の共同体を活性化させていることが明らかになつた。このように、個人のライフヒストリーの聞き取りから、学校と地域の実践共同体の相互生成の過程が再構成された。
