従来から数多く提案されてきた除群法で群れを判別するアルゴリズムは,地震の群れが時間的・空間的に逆冪型の裾の重い減衰や広がりがあるので,統計的に偏りの無い正しい群れの性質を調べるのは困難であった。これに対して,時空間ETASモデルに基づいた確率的除群法は,地震活動の偏りの無い合理的な群れの判別をすることができるだけでなく,これによって群れの再構成の統計的不確定性も与えることが可能である。これによって,まず何処か他の地震に励起された地震(余震,aftershocks)と,地震以外の何らかの原因で起きた地震(background event)を確率的に判別することで,その地域での比が地震学的な指標として意味を持つ。後者の地震の活動を常時活動(background seismicity)という。この時空間パタンから地殻の歪変化を推定することを試みた。具体的には台湾における一世紀にわたる常時活動につい見ると台湾内陸部に顕著な静穏化が見られ,その結果集集(Chi-Chi)地震が起きた様子が見える。集集(Chi-Chi)地震の前駆的すべりがそこでの静穏化を導くだけでなく,台湾付近の他の3つの代表的な地域の常時活動パタンについて矛盾無く説明がつく。地震カタログ全体の地震から,確率的除群法で判別(stochastic separation)された地震群の時空間分布を測ることで地震活動上の統計的特徴を調べた。日本中部のM4以上の地震活動から確率的除群法で判別された地震群を解析すると,本震と余震では,それらに続く余震と二次余震の発生効率(productivity)に有意な違いがあることが分かった。さらに各群れの時間,空間的分布の多くの統計的性質は時空間ETASモデルと調和的であり,モデルの適切さを示しているが,空間的分布で或る偏り(bias)が見られた。このことに基づき時空間ETASモデルを改善することが出来た。このほか,北京周辺の地震活動と地電位の異常変動との統計的因果関係がモデルによって有意であることが示され、これに基づく確率予測とその結果の評価を議論した。
