石門心学の民衆教化運動としての特質を、教化のメディアに焦点を合わせて考察した。心学が普及し得たのは、独特な教化メディアを生み出したことによる部分が大きいという想定からである。1、心学は「学問」として説かれるものであった。だが、心学教化が口頭による教化中心になってゆく様相は、狭義の学問史の動向を追うだけでは説明できない。当時都市社会において、澎湃として湧き起こってきた神道講釈や仏教の談義説法の有り様を見ておく必要がある。これらのオーラルなメディアと心学教化のあり方とを比較することにより、当時、民衆教化において何が問題視されていたのか、そして、その問題に心学がどのように対処しようとしたのかについて考察した。なお、この考察において、いわゆる「談義本」と呼ばれるジャンルの著作を扱った。従来、文学史の分野で扱われてきた「談義本」を、民衆教化のメディアとして取り上げたところにも、本研究の独自性がある。2、心学教化において、書物が活用されなかったわけではない。昨年度の研究で明らかにしたように、書物は積極的に活用されていたのが実態である。本年度は、心学批判を目的に著された書物を各地から蒐集し、内容を分析した。その結果、明らかになったことは、これらの書物は、多かれ少なかれ、心学による民衆教化には限界があることを指摘している点である。のみならず、これらの書物においては、萌芽的にではあれ、心学とは別種の教化のあり方の可能性が模索されていることを明らかにした。以上、1,2をまとめれば、本年度の研究は、心学教化を口頭によるものと書物によるものとに大別したうえで、両者をそれぞれ、当時の社会的動向のもとに位置づけることにより、心学教化の特質を考察するものだったといえる。なお現在、以上の考察を学位論文としてまとめているところである。
