本年度は、サディズム・マゾヒズムと西洋近代資本主義の関係を考察すべく、『プロテスタンティズムの倫理と資本主義の《精神》』において、M・ウェーバーがなしたジャンセニズムとB・パスカルについての議論に着目した。特にここで念頭にあったのは、ほとんどマゾヒスティックとも言える禁欲主義の本態と、それが西洋近代資本主義を生み出したとするウェーバーの議論を検討することであった。論文「理念型としてのB・パスカル--M・ウェーバーとジャンセニズム--」では、ジャンセニズム及びパスカルが、J・カルヴァンとほとんど違いのない教義を持っていたにもかかわらず、なぜ「資本主義の精神」に至らなかったのかについて、「決して神の意思(救いの確証)を得ることができない」というジャンセニズムの教義が、いかなる変容もなく伝播されることを、パスカルの「賭けの議論」から確認した。また、この考察は、禁欲主義と西洋近代資本主義の接続を、J・カルヴァンの教義の伝播に即して再検討する必要性を示すものであり、そのためには、聖書伝播史や聖書翻訳史、読書(読者)史の知見を導入し、それらを総合する視座を持たなければならない。この視座を獲得するために、いまだ明らかにされたとは言いがたいM・フーコーの晩年の歴史記述の方法を考察したものが、論文「M・フーコーにおける現代性moderniteと現在性actualite--歴史を書く方法としての--」である。そこでは、フーコーの歴史記述の態度に一貫して存在する「現代をいかにして記述するか」という問題意識を見取ると同時に、フーコーの「問題化」という概念を、この問題意識に対する、彼の最終的な答えとして理解できることを確認した。また、この概念をさらに発展させれば、聖書(あるいは書物)と、それをめぐる人々との関係を、布置(史)として記述することができることを、併せて示した。
