18世紀におけるイングランド国教会についての研究は、イギリスにおいても少なく、日本ではまだほとんど研究がなされていないといってよい。一般的に、国教会は停滞しており不活発であったとみなされてきた。近年、イギリスの教会史研究ではそのような従来の見方を修正する方向にあるが、イギリス国内の教会改革といったテーマに限られている。本研究では、海外へのイングランド国教会の関係に注目し、布教活動を通じて国教会が活発に活動していたことを明らかにし、18世紀における国教会の意義、重要性を示すことを目的としている。本年度は最終年度であり、以下の研究成果をまとめた。まず、18世紀後半のアメリカ独立革命の時期の布教活動と王党派の動向について口頭発表を行った。(「アメリカ革命と主教制教会」日本西洋史学会第56回大会、2006年5月)この報告内容は「イングランド国教会とアメリカ独立」『史潮』60号に論文として掲載された。また、アメリカの国教会聖職者がイギリスの神学者フッカーの影響を受けながら、独立後のアメリカで主教制教会を確立したことを論文としてまとめ、「リチャード・フッカーと教会統治の可変性」『イギリス哲学研究』第30号に掲載された。18世紀半ばのアメリカ植民地への布教活動やアメリカ主教派遣計画については、「一八世紀半ばのアメリカ植民地におけるイングランド国教会」『西洋史学』に論文を投稿した。そのほか、重要な国教会の布教団体SPGの具体的なアメリカでの異教徒への活動も研究した。以上のように、国教会によるアメリカ植民地への布教・拡大を検討し、18世紀の国教会の発展を明らかにするとともに、学会発表および学術論文としてその内容をまとめ、研究成果をあげることができた。
