ヴィクトリア時代イギリスの階級に関する社会思想を、帝国主義的人種観との連関に的を絞って論じ、既存の社会思想史研究に新たな局面をもたらすことがこの研究の主旨である。1年目の平成16年度の目標は、翌年に行うイギリスでのフィールドワークのための理論的枠組みを構築することであった。研究は以下の手順で遂行された。1.19世紀イギリス思想の流れを理解するために、ロマン主義、リベラリズム、進化論、科学実証主義などについて多くの二次文献を読んだ。2.何人かの特定の思想家に焦点を絞り、歴史的背景を踏まえながら彼らの思想を分析した。(取り上げた思想家は以下の通り:Henry Mayhewの貧困層研究、Herbert SpencerとCharles Darwinの進化論、Benjamin KyddとWalter Bagehotの社会帝国主義、Francis GaltonとKarl Pearsonの優生学思想)3.自身が博士研究で積み上げた人種と階級の連関に関する歴史研究の成果を本研究に関連付ける作業を行った。特に、Ann McClintock、Gertrude Himmelfarb、Arm Stoler、Bernard Semmelらによって展開されている、人種と階級の連関に関する議論を再検討した。こうして研究を積み重ねる一方で、大英帝国史関連の以下の学会・セミナー等で発表を行った:『人種』の概念と実在性をめぐる学際的基礎研究会(京都大学人文社会研究所、4月);日本西洋史学会第54回大会(5月)、近代社会史研究会(5月);Colonialism and Its Aftermath : An Interdisciplinary Conference(オーストラリア、6月);The 18^<th> European Conference on Modern Asian Studies(スウェーデン、7月);イギリス都市生活史研究会(7月);The Pigments of the Imagination Workshop(オーストラリア、11月);越境する歴史学研究会(3月)

The main purpose of this study is to discuss the relationship between social thought and imperialist race and the relationship between existing social thought and history. The goal of the first year of Heisei is to build a theoretical framework for the next year. The study was carried out in an orderly manner. 1.19 The flow of ideas in the century is understood by many secondary documents, such as evolution theory, scientific theory and so on. 2. Who is the focus of a particular thinker? (Take the above thinkers to the following:Henry Mayhew's poverty layer research, Herbert Spencer and Charles Darwin's evolution theory, Benjamin Kydd and Walter Bagehot's social imperialism, Francis Galton and Karl Pearson's eugenics thought)3. My own doctoral research, the accumulation of knowledge, the relationship between ethnic classes, the results of historical research, and the work related to this research.
