本研究の目的は、司教支配の側面からメロヴィング朝フランク王国の国制を明らかにすることである。その論点は、国家と教会の問題にある。この問題を解明すべく、公権力の所在を探ることが重要と考えた。そして、メロヴィング王国内の5世紀から8世紀の司教の事例を調べ、司教権力が公権力としての実態を備えていたのかについて検討した。前年度に引き続き、スイス南東部のクール司教の例を考察し、8世紀後半に同司教テッロが書き残した遺言状を手掛かりとして、司教の領主的支配の特徴を明らかにした。この成果を、2005年7月にイギリスのリーズ大学で開催された国際研究集会にて口頭発表した。そこで得られた助言をもとにして、2006年12月発刊の『奈良史学』に論文を投稿する予定である。特別研究員としての活動がスタートする以前に発表した論文内容についても、改めて調査を行い、新たな知見を加えた。その例として、7世紀後半のル・マンの事例がある。これについては、2005年6月にスイスのチューリヒ大学で開催された中世史コロキウムにて口頭発表をおこなった。そこで、コロキウムの主催者であるR.カイザー教授、およびスイス国内の中世史家から助言を得ることができ、それを受けて、この発表内容をドイツあるいはスイスの雑誌に投稿すべく目下交渉中である。プロソポグラフィーの手法に則り、その他の司教の事例についても調べた。その結果は、2006年5月に関西大学に提出予定となっている課程博士論文の第1章のなかでまとめている。2年間で得られた研究成果は、総じてこの博士論文に集約される。そこで得られた結論は次のようである。すなわち、メロヴィング朝期の司教は、王権とは自立したかたちで、公権力の担い手とはなりえなかった。ここに、国制の実態が見出される。以上が研究実績の概要である。
