フローベールの遺作『ブヴァールとぺキュシェ』(1881年)は、表題に名前が挙げられている二人の主人公が十九世紀の知の領域を次々に探究していくという物語が展開される百科全書的小説である。例えば1840年代前半に設定された第三章では自然科学の諸分野が二人の知的好奇心の対象となり、その後半部分では地質学が採り上げられる。十九世紀の科学はこの時代に起こった科学の大衆化運動への参照なくしては論じることができないが、地質学はこの運動の中心的対象となって社会の広汎な層に流布されたという点から、作者の特権的な関心の対象であったと思われる。本研究は、この地質学という学問を取り巻く歴史的コンテクストを復元することによって、作家の科学観を新たな角度から解明することを目的とするものである。最終年度は、フランスで資料調査を行うとともに、一方ではフローベールを扱った作家研究の文献、他方では小説というジャンルを一般的に論じた文学理論書を参照しつつ、フローべールがいかなる小説的技法を用いて地質学を作中に書き込んでいるのかを分析した。その結果、科学の言説が二人の主人公の知的探究の対象を提供するに止まらず、人物たちを取り巻く事物や人物たちの身体それ自体の創造においても援用されていることが判明した。後者の例としては、(1)宇宙の生成の歴史を学習した人物たちの頭部が、その歴史に登場する天体に比する大きさに膨張する、(2)先史時代の生物に関する書物に感銘を受けた人物たちの身体が、その書物に描かれた恐竜に類似した相貌を一時的に獲得する、等の身体描写が挙げられる。地質学の言説から選出された題材が物語の筋のみならず、小説という文学ジャンル固有の諸構成要素(事物・人物・描写等)の構築を主題的・美学的に支えているという点が、フローベールの作品における科学の位置を特徴付けていることが確認できた。
