本研究は、シルムと呼ばれる朝鮮相撲を通して、朝鮮・韓国においていわゆる伝統文化、民俗文化と称されている事象が、いかなる過程を通して形作られ変容されていったかを明らかにし、それに現れる民族、国家というパラダイムを考察するものである。17年度は16年度に引き続き、韓国の大学、国会図書館などで韓国語の文献や資料を収集するとともに、韓国シルム連盟、大韓シルム協会などを訪れ、シルム関係者とのインタビュー、ビデオ資料などの提供を受けた。また、これらの団体が主催するシルム大会への参与観察を通し、資料の収集やその分析を行った。朝鮮相撲は朝鮮の伝統社会において年中行事の中で行われていた遊戯であった。それが植民地時代を通して大規模な大会が催されることになり、独立後も韓国の代表的な伝統スポーツ文化として幅広い人気を博するようになる。これまでの調査により、シルムが単なる市中の遊戯から、朝鮮伝統のスポーツ文化として形作られるようになった転換点は、日本の植民地時代以後にあることが確認できた。それには民族主義的な組織による支援や、韓国人の韓国観や文化観、そしてそれらが依拠するエスニシティなどによる影響が大きく起因している。今後このような成果を学会などを通して発表し、資料提供者らにもフィードバックして予定である。
